The Study of Chinese Scenes

Personal Project

Originally from China, I was sent to learn Chinese painting when I was 4. The fineness of Chinese painting was something I could not appreciate at that age. I gradually gave up and was eager to learn something perhaps more interesting like animation. Later on, I moved to London and established my career as illustrator and animator. Last winter, I went back to Beijing with my parents to see where my granddad grew up. After refreshing my memory of the buildings and landscapes, I started to think about my root, the culture differences and what made me unique today. Then I have picked up my study of Chinese painting, in which I want to find a way to depict Chinese landscapes with some Chinese painting skills and my 'westernised' illustration style. I experimented with the symbolic cyan blue, some fine thin lines to depict hills and long horizontal clouds.
